A Kangaroo That Lives in the Trees
When I think of a kangaroo, I don’t think of an animal living in a tree. The Tree Kangaroo does, it climbs around in the trees and can jump around almost like a monkey leaping as far as 20 feet from branch to branch.
The Tree Kangaroo lives in the rain forest in New Guinea and in parts of Australia . It is a member of the marsupialia category, an animal with a pouch. It also feeds it’s offspring milk.
The Tree Kangaroo is very big and has a thick body. It has very strong legs and a tail that is as long as its head and body put together. The ears are close and pear-shaped. The fur on it’s body is very short and cushiony. It is gray over it’s backside and a bit lighter colored on the stomach. Has a very black nose, toes and the end of its tail is also black. The head is a size that fits it’s body. It is about 26 inches long and weighs at the most 23 pounds.
Tree trunks are easy for the Tree Kangaroo to move around on. It’s knifelike nails and the rugged texture of it’s feet makes it easy to climb the trees. It can shimmy down a tree tail first with no problem what so ever. If frightened, it can also jump from a height of 50 to 60 feet to the ground below landing and continuing on it’s way.
Most energetic in the evening and after dark the Tree Kangaroo mostly consumes leaves from the trees and bark as it sits up in the trees. It also enjoys eating on young sprouts of trees and bushes.
During the day time hours, the Tree Kangaroo mostly sleeps laying in an infant like postion up in the trees.
