Paleolithic Dogs
Were Paleolithic dogs domesticated?
Evidence has been found that dogs lived with humans as early as 31,700 years ago. That is a full 14,000 years earlier than previously thought. Whenever domestication began, dogs and man have an extremely long history together. Dogs are considered the first domesticated animal.
The domestication of dogs in the Paleolithic age was originally for mutual benefits. Men were hunter-gatherers. Dogs would have been useful to assist man in tracking and hunting. It is thought that they might have also been used to help dragging kills back to the caves where they were eaten. Dogs were fed in return. There has been evidence that there was more than just mutual benefit involved. The three dog skull fossils found near Belgium show a relationship between the dogs and man existed.
The dog skulls found show some interesting evidence of domesticity:
* The skulls had been pierced after their death. This was a sort of “religious” practice of the time to “release the soul” of the animal. The soul was thought to have been in the brain.
* The one dog had a large bone in its mouth placed there after death, showing it was being provided for in the after-life. Humans obviously fed them meat from kills, and cared what happened to the dog.
* The dogs were buried –not an action that would take place, unless the animal meant something emotionally.
The skulls were not wolf skulls, they had shorter snouts and wider skulls than wolves. From reconstructing the evidence, these dogs were about 24 inches high, weighed about 77 pounds and might have looked similar to the Siberian Husky. The remains of the dogs indicated they were between 4 and 8 years old at the time of their death. Much later archeological finds unearthed a puppy buried with a human – clear evidence of an emotional bond between man and dog.
The three dog fossils are the earliest evidence of the domestication of Paleolithic dogs. Evidence found 14 000 years later reveals dogs of many sizes and shapes all associated closely with man.
