Housewife, Gardener, Professor Discovers 4 Unknown Species Living in Her Garden
For close to 40 years, Jennifer Owen had a biology experiement happening in her garden. She has a degree in biology and is a university professor. Her husband is a zoologist. She set up her garden in her suburban yard and began to classify all the insects and animals she found there. She started her garden back in 1972. Even her children were a part of the project helping her catch insects and classiflying them.
Jennifer found 8000 different mammals, birds, frogs, lizards, insects and arachnids over the years. There were 20 species she found that had never been reported as being seen before in Britain, and 4 species never been seen before at all.
Along with catagorizing insects and mammals, she also kept records of the climat changes over time. She noticed how some insects changed thier habits as weather became too dry or too wet. Also as warming trends came she would see a whole new group of insects invading her garden. Agricultural spraying to get rid of bugs caused the numbers to decline. Jennifers small garden, around 1/7th the size of a football field, provided a lot of information over the years.
If you have the ability to put in a garden or maybe visit the park. Then you too can watch for different insects and animals that visit the gardens.
Giant African Land Snail Invades Florida
These huge house eating snails have been found in the southwestern area of Miami. They are able to eat stucco right off your house leaving you with block or wood, which ever it has been built with. They have declared the area of Miami, “ground zero.”
The snails are prohibited in the US. There was a case of a young child who brought some in with them from Hawaii. It took 10 years and a million dollars to get rid of what resulted in 17,000 snails. Many people think they would make nice pets. Some religious groups use them for healing. One young lady had been experiencing stomach problems. Her mother told of her being administered the juices of a living snail in a religious procedure.

The 10 inch long snails may carry the rat-lung worm disease and make people very sick, possibly giving them meningitis. People are being told not to touch them. They leave a slimy residue as they crawl like slugs do. Leaving pet food out or garbage not secured in cans attracts them.
Since they are disease prone, people are being asked not to touch them,. If you see one of these snails, you are to call the Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services to come pick it up. Once the snail is captured, it will receive an ID and be placed in a freezer. This is considered a gentle way of getting rid of them, but I can’t imagine freezing to death.
Huge Wasp is Five Times Larger Then Typical Wasps
A wasp flying at me or around my children outside freaks me out. Being stung by one is extremely painful. Now we have a wasp that is 5 times as big as the ones I am currently running from. The males can grow to be 2.5 inches long with huge jaws that can bite. The jaws are extremely strong and longer then their front legs.
The type is called the Dalara garuda. It’s just been recently named. The dinosaur of a wasp got it’s name,”Garuda,” from a bird in Indonesia. The bird is a mythical, “winged warrior.” The wasp is a fearsome creature with it’s biting jaws and ability to sting too.
Michael Ohl, an Entomologist, discovered the wasp in an insect collection at a museum where he was studying insects. The wasp was found on Indonesia’s Sulawesi Island by Lynn Kimsey of the University of California,Davis.
The wasp is a dark black color. With it’s tremendous jaws it has a evil look about it. It is assumed that the huge jaws are used in fighting and mating. At this time the wasp is pretty much a mystery as it hasn’t been observed in the wild.
The female of the species is smaller but still quite a bit larger then our typical female wasp.

Demand for the snails that are a gourmet specialty in some countries has led to their almost complete extinction, and some of them may not be collect in nature anymore. And so ended the infamous worm, which was at the wrong time in the wrong place.
Wasps, Tarantula, Mantis and Lizard
Wasps:
Nearly all of wasp species are “parasitic”, and the ovipositor is used only to lay eggs, typically directly into the physique of the host. Probably the most familiar wasps belong to Aculeata, a division of Apocrita, whose ovipositors are tailored right into a venomous sting, although an awesome many aculeate species don’t sting. Aculeata additionally comprises ants and bees, and many wasps are generally mistaken for bees, and vice-versa. Within the same respect, insects called “velvet ants” are technically wasps.
Tarantula:
Like all arthropods, the tarantula is an invertebrate that depends upon an exoskeleton for muscular support. A tarantula’s body includes two predominant elements, the prosoma and the opisthosoma. The prosoma and opisthosoma are associated by the pedicle, or what is commonly called the pregenital somite. This waist-like connecting piece is actually part of the prosoma and permits the opisthosoma to go in a wide flexibility relative to the prosoma.
Mantis:
Mantises have two greedy, spiked forelegs through which prey items are caught and held securely. The first thoracic section, the prothorax, is often elongated and flexibly articulated, allowing for larger range of motion of the entrance limbs, as the remainder of the body remains kind of immobile. The articulation of the head can be remarkably versatile, permitting almost 300 levels of motion in some species, permitting for an ideal range of vision without having having to move the rest of the body. As their searching relies closely on vision, they’re primarily diurnal, but many species will fly at night.
Lizard:
Lizards are a widespread group of squamate reptiles, with almost 3800 species, ranging throughout all continents besides Antarctica along with most oceanic island chains.

Typically included under the envelope of spatial cognition is figure in people and different animals in visible search tasks, which intention to experimentally address questions about looking out via one’s environment for a particular object.
