A Strawberry Leopard Sighted in South Africa

Aren’t leopards usually a chromatic color and have black spots on them?

Can they actually change their color? The leopards of Africa are typically a tawny color with black spots, but this male leopard is definitely not tawny in color. His fur is in fact a strawberry color. The leopard was sighted in South Africa’s Madikwe Game Reserve. Visitors to the reserve had mentioned seeing a leopard of a different color, but until the photographer, Deon De Villiers, who is also a guide took a photo of the leopard there had been no definite pictures of it. The picture was forwarded to the experts at Panthera, which is a wild cat conservation group run by the US to ask them about this strange color for a leopard.

A Genetic condition

At the Panthera, the president Luke Hunter has speculated that possibly the leopard has erthrism. Erthrism is a genetic condition that could possibly be the result of too many red pigments in the skin or maybe not enough dark pigments. It is a disease that is not well known at this time. It is a rare disease and this is the first known possible case of it in a leopard.

Strawberry colored but healthy

Hunter was surprised that this was the first picture to authenticate the leopards existence. The leopard seems to be very relaxed around vehicles. He appears to be very healthy and his color is apparently not causing him any problems. It is unusual to see this disease in a meat eating animal. It typically occurs in raccoons, Eurasian badgers, and coyotes. The strawberry coloration still allows him to hide in the trees or area growth while hunting for food. Hunter called him, “a successful animal.” As long as he stays on the reserve, he will also be a safe animal. If he wanders off the reserve, he is fair game and it’s legal to hunt him down for just a trophy.

A White Wombat Found and Nursed back to Health in Australia

The little guy was thirsty, tired and was rather close to death when he was found by some local sheep shearers that were working on some property close by him. He is a very rare wombat. He has white hair and is a Southern hairy nosed wombat. They named him Polar because of  his white fur. He was taken by a wildlife volunteer worker in south Australia were he is being taken care of. Polar is doing much better now that he is in the care of the wildlife volunteer. He is eating and getting a lot of attention there. He has made an amazing recovery after being so close to death.

The Southern hairy nosed wombat can grow to be 40 inches and weigh somewhere between 40 and 68 pounds. The wombat is very rare and finding him is a great discovery. They are going to use him to teach others about the Southern hairy nosed wombats for a few years. Then they are going to put him into a breeding program so that he can help develop more wombats like him. He will live out his days in the sanctuary and hopefully produce many little wombats. He is a very cute and adorable little animal. I think he would make a great pet.

Many animals end up in dire need of help and we are lucky that there are places like this that take them in. Typically they will help them through the difficult time they are having and then release them. Sometimes if the animal is too young or rare as in this case, they choose to keep them in the shelter to insure their safety. In this case, they are trying to insure that more wombats like Polar will continue to live in our world and not go extinct.

The Rare Lantern Shark

A shark that can glow in the dark and yet seem to disappear when danger appears. The shark has been seen in the waters surrounding the Okinawa Islands of Japan. It had been thought that the shark was only found in the East China Sea and in the waters south of Japan.

The shark emits light with organs called photophores. The light can also make it appear invisible and help it hide from it’s enemies. It is a small shark and is from the family of dogfish sharks.

When the shark is swimming above, the photophores on it’s belly that emit the light make it invisible to anything swimming below. There are 9 different areas on the sharks body that emit this light. Some of the areas are located on it’s flanks, tail, sexual organs, and pectoral fins. The shark is found anywhere from 656 feet to 3,281 feet beneath the water.

A Newly Born “donkra” At A Chinese Zoo

A donkra is a baby born to parents that are a zebra and donkey mix. This donkra has a mother who is a zebra and it’s father is a donkey.

The donkra was born at the Xiamen Haicang Zoo in China.

The donkra has stripes on it’s legs like a zebra but it’s body more so resembles a donkey.

At this time the donkra is only a meter in hieght and weighs in at about 30 kilograms. It’s birth was announced on Monday.

There were some problems during the birth. The donkra choked on the mothers amniotic fluid which causes asphyxiation. They had to hold him upside down after wards to try and clean the fluid from his nostrils and mouth.

The mother is eating bran and brown sugar to make sure she has enough milk for him to eat.

Human Dog

This is a weird video of human dog, dog that looks like human. This picture can be from some genetic laboratories. Did you watch movie Splice? If you did then you know how things are when people mess with genetic codes. Or maybe is this just good photo-shop.
