The Highly Sociable Australian Bird

Gouldian Finches are blazing with color. They are gorgeous birds and they have various personalities. The finches can be encountered out in the open, semitropical wooded areas of Australia. Even though as adult birds, their feathers are very colorful, at birth, they are a bland greenish brown color. When they are a few months old, they have their first moult. Their first moult brings out their vivid colors.

Red Heads – Black Heads

Some of the Gouldian finches have red heads and some of them have black heads. There are even some with yellow heads. Some researchers have discovered that the color of their heads may be a sign as to what type of personality the birds have. The finches with the red heads seemed to be more aggressive. Just how we describe red headed people as having a temper, the red headed Gouldian has been found to have a fiery personality. The black headed Gouldian’s seem to have more of a bold personality. They appear to be the leaders of the groups. What is kind of funny is, they keep their distance from the red headed ones. The black headed ones are also the ones that will take greater risk. Returning to their nest after being in danger from a predator faster than the red headed ones. Researchers are trying to figure out if the color of their heads do dominate their personalities or not.

Yellow Heads

Nothing was said about the yellow headed Gouldian Finch. Maybe they are the more patient and a more all around social bird with all the others. Does the color of their heads really tell their personality? At first researchers thought that the different colors meant they were of a different species. It has now been found that they are the same species only with different colors.
