Found in Vietnam

While some scientists were trekking through a low-lying wooded area in Vietnam back in 2009, they discovered a huge green frog. It was just sitting there on a log according to an amphibian biologist, Jodi Rowley. She is a biologist at the Australian Museum located in Sydney.

New frog is a flying frog

The frog was 3.5 inches in length. That is a little large for a flying frog. This frog is a new kind of flying frog. It has webbed feet that allow it to parachute from branch to branch. The frog has been named, Helen’s flying frog. Jodi named it in honor of her mother. Helen was a strong supporter of Jodi’s choice of work. There are 80 different kinds of flying frogs. Helen’s frog can fly so much better than the other flying frogs due to its large webbed hands and feet. The female of Helen’s flying frogs has a flap that is located on their forearms. It is questionable as to if this helps the females fly any better than the males. With the additional weight a female carries, this may not enable them to fly any better than a male that usually weighs less.

Tree dwellers

What kept these frogs from being discovered sooner? It is possible that because the frogs mainly live in the trees that they have managed to go unobserved until now. The flying frog was found under 60 miles away from a heavily populated area. Helen’s flying frogs may be in for a change of life as the urban areas are closing in on them. Loss of habitat of this new found species may soon be a problem. Jodi feels that as long as they do have big trees and pond areas they may survive. The threats will be logging and too much development. As with many other species, these have also become a threat to their survival.

Puppy is so excited about it’s treat, but she can’t seem to quit playing with it first.
