A shark that can glow in the dark and yet seem to disappear when danger appears. The shark has been seen in the waters surrounding the Okinawa Islands of Japan. It had been thought that the shark was only found in the East China Sea and in the waters south of Japan.
The shark emits light with organs called photophores. The light can also make it appear invisible and help it hide from it’s enemies. It is a small shark and is from the family of dogfish sharks.
When the shark is swimming above, the photophores on it’s belly that emit the light make it invisible to anything swimming below. There are 9 different areas on the sharks body that emit this light. Some of the areas are located on it’s flanks, tail, sexual organs, and pectoral fins. The shark is found anywhere from 656 feet to 3,281 feet beneath the water.
