Horse Gives Birth to Twins
It is a rare sight indeed to see a horse give birth to twins, but it did happen in San Diego.
Sunny and Angel were born on March 28th, 2010. Their chances of livinig were very slim.
Dr. Rodrigo Vanzquez explained about how the uterus in a horse cannot hold two infants. If there are two in the womb, one usually dies early during pregnancy. It is uncommon that both horses live till they are birthed. If they do, there are always complications.
“Their lungs are not developed, or they get septic, infections and then end up dying,” Dr. Vazquez said.
Without help, Angel would not have been expected to survive. He put her on antibotics.
Both Sunny and Angel are watched over 24 hours a day to be sure the are getting enough to eat. At this time, thngs are looking good.
The Dr felt better once the twins were two weeks of age.
A horse giving birth to twins, and them surviving, is a once in a life time chance.
The mother horse did have a rather large stomach while she was pregnant, but the owner had no idea she was carrying twins.
The mother, Lena, is a 9 year old quarter horse.
At this time, both twins are doing fairly good but are still not assured to be okay.
