The Heaviest Lizard On EarthHow could a lizard or dragon as long as 10 feet weighing more then 300 pounds and have lived on the earth for millions of years and only be known to man 100 years ago.

The Komodo dragon is the heaviest lizard on the planet and can run as fast as 11 miles an hours. Their heads are elongated and flat with circular noses, the skin is scale covered, legs that bow out and very large, hefty tails.

These dragons flourish in the rough climate of Indonesia on the Lesser Sunda Islands. They are the dominating speicies on the islands and eat most anything they can catch. Some of the animals that live there are carrion, deer, pigs, petite dragons, and the huge water buffalo. The dragons hides patiently as it lies waiting for animals to pass by. When one comes near, the dragon leaps out with it’s strong legs using its penetrating claws and it’s saw-toothed teeth to disembowel its vicitm. The dragon is able to eat almost 80 percent of it’s weight in just one meal.

If any animal or human escapes the dragon they are said to be lucky, only it’s only for a short time. The spittle of the dragon mixes with over 50 different types of bacteria which within 24 hours can cause the victim to die from poisoning of the blood.

There are approximately 3,000 to 5,000 of the dragons on the islands of Komodo, Gila Motang, Rinca, and Flores. Even with the large numbers, the dragon is close to being endangered due to a shortage of fertile females, the invasion of people and natural disasters.
